The innovative resonance controlling device for vinyl records and turntables.

This is neither a record clamp nor a record puck – it is a record stabilizer. With the design of these new Ansuz Darkz Record Stabilizers, Michael Børresen and his acoustic engineering team ventured onto new and innovative territory to optimize the performance of nearly any turntable.

    Description

It is widely known that adding pressure or weight to the center of a vinyl record can improve the sound of the bass of the record. This is properly also the reason why a lot of turntable manufactures include record clamps with their audio product. Unfortunately, this advantage most often comes hand in glove with a considerable downside – the reproduction of the music turns out to be much flatter, more compressed and without the vividness that is so idiosyncratic of vinyl sources.

Record clamps that are screwed onto the center pin of the turntable also bring the record in direct mechanical contact with the center barring of the platter. The result is more background noise and an audible layer of rumbling distortions to the music. To avoid these acoustic drawbacks, the Ansuz Darkz Record Stabilizer is neither adding a lot of weight nor is it in direct contact with the center pin.

The Ansuz Darkz Record Stabilizer weighs only between 374 and 750 grams (depending on the various optional quality levels) and rests on 12 small Titanium balls on the record. The idea is to stabilize the resonances emanating from the vinyl and to avoid any clamping down and deforming of the record. For the vinyl, this opens up the audio gates of unmitigated musicality. It unleashes a stunning tonality that brings the individual timbre of instruments to the fore and creates a most impressive, three dimensional sound stage where the vocal range of a singer enchants any listener into a live concert.

    RECORD STABILIZER D·TC

The D·TC Ansuz Darkz Record Stabilizer is the heaviest of the three versions and mainly designed for turntables without a floating suspension.

The material consists of mechanically tuned solid pieces of composite metal containing Bronze and Tantalum, covered – in a particle accelerator during a 20 hours process – with layers of Tantalum and Diamond for a further dampening of resonances.

The Stabilizer is decoupled from the turntable’s center pin with a slightly oversized bushing of POM. The resonance controlling balls underneath are made of grade 2 Titanium, chosen for its durability and sonic qualities.

    RECORD STABILIZER T2

The T2 Ansuz Darkz Record Stabilizer is machined out of solid Titanium and weighs only 374 gram. It can be used on nearly any turntable, even on floating constructions. The material is solid grade 2 Titanium that has been machined and then glass-blasted to perfection.

    RECORD STABILIZER T2S

The T2S (Supreme) Ansuz Darkz Record Stabilizer is machined out of solid Titanium and weighs merely 374 gram. It can be used on nearly any turntable, even on floating constructions.

The material is solid grade 2 Titanium covered – in a particle accelerator during a 36 hours process – with layers of Zirconium, Tungsten and Aluminum Titanium Nitride for a further dampening of resonances. The Stabilizer is decoupled from the turntable’s center pin with a slightly oversized bushing of POM.

The resonance controlling balls underneath the Stabilizer are made of grade 2 Titanium, chosen for its durability and sonic qualities. All three versions of Ansuz Darkz Record Stabilizers are unique and unrivalled tools for bringing out the very best of any High-End turntable.

In both the design and production phase, scientists at the Technology Institute of Jutland have played a critical role. Without their extensive knowledge about materials and their refined skills in operating the advanced particle accelerators, we could have never achieved this final outcome.

The bare Titanium Stabilizers are mounted on racks and sandblasted to have the proper surface finish as the appearance of the final product is highly contingent upon the surface topography prior to the coating deposition.

After sandblasting, the Titanium Stabilizers are cleaned in an ultrasonic bath and further cleaned in a water cascade with demineralized water to make sure they are completely free of any dirt and grease. The Stabilizers are then dried and stored in an oven until they are ready to be coated.

Prior to the coating process, the Titanium Stabilizers are mounted on holders that can be inserted into the particle accelerator. In the deposition chamber, large pumps extract all air that is in the chamber to create conditions similar to those in outer space. To guarantee perfect conditions of the vacuum, the coating unit with the Stabilizers is heated to remove water and other contaminants that are in the air.

Even these pure conditions do not suffice to achieve the desired quality level! A small amount of Argon gas is let into the chamber to receive a perfect adhesion of the coating to the Titanium Stabilizers. By applying a voltage to these Stabilizers, they are exposed to a bombardment of Argon ions. This removes the naturally formed oxides from the Titanium surface. Under these conditions, high-performing coatings can be applied and spread on the surface of the Titanium Stabilizers.

The acoustically optimized layers of Zirconium and Tungsten are then deposited on the Titanium surface, and finally a hard layer of Aluminum Titanium Nitride is added to obtain the desired surface properties and the intended visual appearance.

After everything is cooled down, the coating unit is vented, and the coated Titanium Stabilizers can now be taken off the holders. Quality control checks if the adhesion and thickness of the coating are within the set specifications. The adhesion test is performed by pushing a diamond tip through the coating and deep into the substrate.

The second part of the quality inspection consists of the measurement of the thickness of the coating. For this, a ball is being ground through the coating layers supported by the application of a diamond paste. Under a microscope, the individual layers become visible and can be measured precisely. After the Ansuz Darkz Record Stabilizers have passed the quality control, they have to undergo a final visual inspection before they are packed and ready for assembly.
